Pune, 30th November 2021: On the background of the emergence of a new variant of Coronavirus and its threat to the citizens, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is giving special attention to International travellers.

Recently a person who returned from South Africa has been quarantined at his home and the RTPCR testing is carried out. If the person tested positive, his sample will be sent to the laboratory for identifying whether he is infected with the new variant or not, said PMC health officer Dr Sanjeev Wavare.

Recently a new variant named ‘Omicron’ has been detected in South Africa. It is said that this variant is possibly even more transmissible than the highly infectious Delta variant and that current vaccines may be less effective against it.

Therefore an alert was declared worldwide and many countries are taking precautions to curb the spread of this virus variant. India too issued guidelines on Monday, 29th November.

Accordingly, authorities are tracing those travellers coming from South Africa, Hongkong, Germany, Austria, Zimbabwe and Israel.

In Pune, authorities are tracing those passengers who arrived from various international airports especially from mentioned countries.
