Pune: Two College Students Drown in Khadakwasla Dam While Swimming

Pune, 20th February 2023: Two college students drowned in the catchment area of Khadakwasla dam in Sonapur village, and unfortunately, their bodies were later found by the police. The incident took place on Pune-Panshet road.

The victims were identified as Farhan Aleem Sheikh, aged 18, and Sahil Vilas Thakar, aged 19. Both were residents of Kothrud.

According to police, the five friends, who were under the influence of alcohol, had come for a walk in the catchment area of the Khadakwasla dam. In the evening, Farhan and Sahil entered the water for swimming but were unable to predict the depth and currents. Within a few moments, both of them drowned. The other three friends tried to save them but were unsuccessful. The villagers were alerted after the other youths shouted for help.

The Haveli police station was informed by Sonapur gram panchayat member Goraksh Pavle. Soon, the police inspector and other officials reached the spot. Under the guidance of the Divisional Fire Officer of PMRDA, the bodies of the two drowned youths were retrieved with the help of local citizens. The Haveli police are taking further action in this regard.

Local residents have informed that this place is dangerous and not suitable for swimming, and Sonapur Gram Panchayat has installed a warning signboard in the area. Unfortunately, despite these warnings, the youths entered the water under the influence of alcohol, and it led to a tragic accident.
