Pune: Two Doctors Sentenced 10 Years Imprisonment, Fined Rs 5 Lakh For Death Of Patient

Pune, September 29, 2020: The District and Sessions Court today convicted two doctors for causing the death of a 21-year-old woman due to negligence and sentenced them to 10 years of imprisonment. The woman had died during the caesarean operation. The court ruled that the doctors were not competent to perform the surgery.

Additional Sessions judge VR Jagdale also imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh each on Dr Jitendra Suresh Shimpi (40) and Dr Sachin Hari Deshpande (39). Anesthesiologist Dr Vijay Agarwal was acquitted. Shimpi is the owner of Athashri Hospital and Asha Nursing Home, while two others worked there.

Based on a complaint from Anil Jagtap (then 32 years old), Dehuroad police station had registered FIR against the doctors. The incident had taken place in 2012. Jagtap is an ambulance driver. Jagtap’s wife Rajshri was admitted in the hospital for delivery. Earlier also Rajshri had delivered a girl child through caesarean at another hospital.

As per the case details, Rajshri was admitted in the hospital as per the date given by the doctor. She was to also undergo family planning operation. However, during delivery, her condition deteriorated. She was shifted to another hospital. There was excessive blood loss and she died during treatment.

Police officer Amol Chaudhary investigated the case while Public Prosecutor Rajesh Kavediya represented the prosecution. The court appreciated their work.
