Camp, 23rd April 2025: In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, the Pune Cantonment Police have filed an FIR against two young men from the Camp area for viciously attacking a stray dog with wooden planks and stones on Sunday night. The incident took place on MG Road and was captured on CCTV.

The injured dog, named Bittu, is a familiar presence in the locality and is often seen in the company of a homeless man who lives on the streets of MG Road. After witnessing Bittu in severe pain, the man took the injured animal to an animal welfare NGO for emergency care.

According to Senior Police Inspector Girish Dighavkar of the Cantonment Police Station, the matter came to light when a local resident, Padmini Stump (67) of Gurunanaknagar, filed a formal complaint late Monday evening. “The dog suffered visible injuries. The NGO staff promptly provided medical treatment and informed us about the cruelty involved,” Dighavkar said.

The police reviewed CCTV footage from the area which clearly shows two youths assaulting the dog after it reportedly barked at them. “We have identified the individuals seen in the footage and will summon them for questioning shortly,” Dighavkar added.

The case has sparked outrage among local residents and animal rights advocates, who are calling for swift and strict action against those responsible. Police have assured the public that they are treating the matter seriously under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Citizens are encouraged to report any incidents of animal abuse to local authorities to ensure such violence is not repeated.
