Pune, 8th December 2022: Pune, known as the city of two-wheelers, has been rampant by thieves. Every day, five to six two-wheelers are stolen from different parts of the city. Till November, 1,666 vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars, have been reported missing to the police.

There is a high rate of theft of two-wheelers from crowded places and societies in the city. There has also been an increase in the theft of two-wheelers parked on the premises of government offices and hospitals. There are incidents of cars parked on society’s premises being stolen too. Vehicle thieves are rampant in the city. Two-wheelers are stolen from the city and sold in rural areas and other states. The police have failed to identify most of the thieves.

Once the vehicle is stolen, it cannot be found again. CCTV cameras installed in different parts of the city help in tracking the thieves. However, after stealing the vehicle, the thieves change the number plates. This makes it difficult to trace the vehicle after it is stolen. A large number of citizens have settled in Pune city for jobs, business, and education. Common people have to bear the brunt of the stolen vehicle taken on loan.

Crowded areas are patrolled to catch auto thieves. A team has also been formed by the crime branch to catch vehicle thieves. However, the plan to catch vehicle thieves is only on paper and has failed on the application end. Most car theft crimes occur in the suburbs.
