Pune, 27th March 2023: Around 500 female students residing in the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) hostels have been facing immense hardships due to the irregular supply of water and electricity in their dorms.

The problem has been further amplified by the non-functioning lifts, which are forcing the students to climb several floors carrying water containers. The situation has taken a toll on the mental and physical health of the students.

An MSc student expressed her concerns over the current situation and mentioned that the lack of hot water is affecting their studies and practical projects.

An MA student highlighted that the students are forced to fight for basic amenities, such as drinking water, food quality at the canteen, and hot water for bathing.

Another student mentioned that the hostel management is harassing the students for raising questions regarding the water supply, lift maintenance, and other facilities.

Sangita Deshpande, the rector of SPPU girls’ hostel, acknowledged the issues caused by the uneven water and electricity supply and the non-functional lifts. However, she claimed that the technical issues have been resolved and the lift has started functioning. She also assured that the second lift will start functioning soon and the issue of drinking water and hot water will be sorted.
