Pune, November 27, 2020: Several controversies had come to light in the past few months amid the online/offline examination conducted by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). However, a student has claimed to have been beaten up by security guards for allegedly recording the conversation inside the Director of Examination and Evaluation cabin.

Aditya Tangde Patil, B.Sc student of Garware college was allegedly beaten up by the security guards of SPPU on Thursday after he went to meet Mahesh Kakade, Director of Examination and Evaluation, as he obtained 0 marks in one of his online tests.

Speaking to Punekarnews.in, Patil said, “I have been taking rounds of SPPU since November 21. I have taken an education loan of Rs 40,000 and have secured admission at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), however, my results show that I failed despite giving the exam rightly. So I visited SPPU many times but nothing happened.”

Patil further said, “Seeking some help, I went to visit Kakade sir, and started recording the conversation. After Kakade sir got to know I was recording, my phone was snatched off and I was beaten up by the security guards  Later on, after checking my phone, I  was given my phone back and the guards drove me towards the main gate.”

This incident has shook various Student activists. Vaibhav Edke, president of Maharashtra Student Welfare Association (MSWA) said, “We demand SPPU to take immediate action against all the people involved in this. We understand that the student wasn’t supposed to record the conversation, but this type of harassment isn’t acceptable. We also demand immediate resignation of the officer who ordered the guards to beat the student, and also demand to immediately recruit new officers who can resolve students’ issues.”

Somnath Lohar, president of NCP Student Union said, “I will personally visit Kakade sir and give him a stick and ask him to beat me up so that he doesn’t beat up other students. This is highly condemnable and NCP will escalate this issue.”

Kamalakar Shete, vice president, Yuvak Kranti Dal said, “Strict actions should be taken against such culprits who have beaten up an innocent student.”

Clarifying this issue Kakade told Punekarnews.in, “The student was recording us, inside the Department which has really sensitive information. However, I do not know whether he was beaten up by the guards or not.”

When Punekar News. in contacted the security department, an official said, “No we did not beat up the boy, the matter was resolved in the director’s office itself. We left him outside the main campus.”

However, the student met the Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar and complained about the who episode.
