Pune, 14th December 2022: The cost of food at the refectory of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) will increase by 25% in 2023 for almost 1,000 students. The university has chosen to raise the cost of meals served in the main canteen and other cafeterias, although students have repeatedly complained about the refectory’s food quality. The ruling will take effect on 1st January. The increase in food prices has made students even more dissatisfied.

Vegetables were discovered to be kept in an unsanitary and open environment in November. The facility’s contractor said that despite repeated requests, the SPPU estate department failed to fix the equipment.

Even now, a month later, all the problems are still unsolved. Instead of taking action to address the urgent problem of poor food quality, the SPPU management council chose to change the price of food provided at the main refectory and other dining establishments during a recent meeting.

The price of a full thali has increased from Rs 35 to Rs 40 for monthly members and from Rs 40 to Rs 47 for students who do not use the cafeteria monthly, according to a circular released by the SPPU administration. The cost of a small thali has also increased from Rs 25 to Rs 35. The majority of pupils eat a full thali, whereas visitors prefer small thalis.

Students have expressed displeasure regarding the move. The University, on the other hand, has explained that the price has changed after five years.
