Pune, 5th October 2021: Many student organisations including Yuvak Kranti Dal (Yukrand) Maharashtra, Youth Congress (Maharashtra), NCP student wing, and other organizations have decided to protest against the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) administration within 15 days. They are demanding the reopening of the colleges and university departments as well as rollback of hiked fees.

The students have been demanding departmental fee concessions since the university is also charging fees for services like gymkhana, library and laboratory fees, skill-based courses as well as human rights.

Students have been attending the lectures online since the onset of the covid-19 from March 2020.

On 29th September 2021, the student union had organized a meeting regarding the fee concessions and re-opening of colleges. Now protests will be held at the main building of the SPPU campus within 15 days.

“We don’t have any other option left. We have repeatedly tried to reach the university administration, but haven’t received any reply. We are planning a protest demanding the reopening of colleges, university departments, hostels, and libraries. We also demand departmental concession of fees and further interview and admission procedure of the PET exam (for Ph.D.) be started soon, which has been long stalled after declaring the results of the written exam”, said Kamlakar  Shete, vice president, Yuvak Kranti Dal, Maharashtra.

“The schools have started and the colleges should be started as well so that students can come to the campus and attend the lectures physically following the norms of social distancing. They can use the library and pursue their studies. The university should give free vaccination to all the students who would be coming to the campus. Those students who are already vaccinated should be allowed to sit in the classes. Students who are facing health issues can attend the lectures online. The university can adopt the hybrid mode of teaching”, said Satish Gore, secretary, Youth Congress.
