Pune 24th August 2023 : The District Collector of Pune had issued an order to close the movement of heavy vehicles from Varandha Ghat area in July due to safety concerns. However, the administration has now issued an order to allow movement of heavy vehicles from August 25.

Earlier the decision to ban movement of heavy vehicles was taken as a precautionary measure as the ghat witnesses landslides, tree falls during the monsoon season. The movement of light vehicles was also banned on the days when IMD issued a heavy rain alert for the district. Since there has been no rainfall in the district for the last few days and no alert was issued by IMD the authorities have decided to open the road for all vehicles.

It may be noted that Varandha ghat connects Pandharpur with Mahad via Bhor, one of the shortest routes that connects Western Maharashtra with Konkan region. Due to this many vehicles travel on this route throughout the year. The local politicians of the area had also requested the administration to open the road since during the road closure the vehicles have to take a long route through Tamhini Ghat to reach Konkan.
