Talegaon Dabhade, 19th April 2023: While trying to save a two-wheeler coming from the no-entry, the bus fell into a ditch and met with an accident. The incident took place on 11th April at Talegaon on the old Pune-Mumbai highway. Fortunately, there were no casualties. However, due to this incident, the issue of action against vehicles coming in the opposite direction has come to the fore.

Traffic police and Regional Transport Offices (RTO) do not take any action against such vehicle drivers even though the vehicles are coming in the opposite direction. Night travel is becoming more dangerous due to the same. In the darkness of the night, the light of the headlights and the vehicles running in the opposite direction mostly invite accidents.

Three highways pass through Maval taluka namely Pune Mumbai Expressway, Old Pune Mumbai Marg, and Talegaon-Shikrapur Highway. In comparison, traffic discipline is not seen among the citizens. Traffic police and RTO do not seem to be taking any action.

In recent times the number of accidents has increased. Between Talegaon Phata and Vadgaon Phata on 11th April, five accidents took place on a single day within a distance of five kilometres. One person died and two others were injured.

The major causes of accidents are the increased number of vehicles, the second and most important cause is two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy vehicles running in the opposite direction and third is the growing dhaba culture on the highways. Unlimited speed of vehicles, drunk driving, and untrained drivers are also the reasons.

U-turns are provided at certain distances on the highway. However, drivers do not seem to follow the rules. They bypass the direct detour and take a shortcut to their destination. So for some distance, the drivers come through no-entry and endanger their lives as well as others. Between Dehurod and Lonavala, many such dangerous “spots” have been created.

Local citizens said that there is a need to create public awareness among vehicle drivers to reduce the number of accidents. Some also expressed the opinion that the Traffic Department should take strict action to stop the traffic in the opposite direction. Punitive action will surely reduce the accident rate. At least if the vehicles running in the opposite direction are stopped, many lives will be saved.
