Pune: Water Supply Disrupted In Several Pune Areas Due To Bhama Askhed Dam Cable Fire; Repair Delays Restoration

Pune, 7th March 2025: Residents of Vadgaon Sheri, Dhanori, Viman Nagar, and Vishrantwadi faced water supply disruptions on Thursday after a cable at the jackwell of Bham Askhed Dam caught fire on Wednesday (5th March). Although repair work was completed on Thursday (6th March) morning, the water supply had not been fully restored.
Officials from the Water Supply Department assured that normal water distribution would resumed by Friday (7th March) evening. However, nearly 3 lakh residents in the affected areas continued to struggle with inadequate or low-pressure water supply.
Residents of Dhanori, Yerawada, and Vishrantwadi have been facing water shortages for several days. These areas receive their water from Bhama Askhed Dam, but complaints to the Water Supply Department have yielded little improvement. The situation worsened when the dam’s jackwell cable burned out on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a halt in supply to Vadgaon Sheri, Lohgaon, and Yerawada, among other areas.
The sudden disruption caused inconvenience to many, with water supply being completely shut off in several areas after Wednesday afternoon. The Water Supply Department had initially claimed that service would be restored by Thursday afternoon. However, the repairs took longer than expected, leaving residents without water for another day.
Despite the completion of cable repairs, water supply remained affected because the jackwell had been shut down. This resulted in continued shortages on Nagar Road and surrounding areas. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials have now assured that the water supply will be fully restored by Friday evening.
