L&T Introduces Menstrual Leave Policy for Women Employees

Mumbai, 7th March 2025: Engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a menstrual leave policy for its female employees, marking a significant step in workplace inclusivity within the industry. The initiative, unveiled by Chairman S. N. Subrahmanyan during Women’s Day celebrations at the company’s Powai office, grants women a one-day leave each month.
Speaking at the event, which was attended by around 350 women employees, Subrahmanyan emphasized the importance of acknowledging the needs of female staff. “We want to create a workplace where our employees feel supported in every aspect, including their well-being,” he stated.
L&T currently employs approximately 60,000 people, with women making up around 9% of the workforce (about 5,000 employees). The introduction of menstrual leave follows Subrahmanyan’s previous remarks on work culture, including his controversial suggestion of a 90-hour workweek and his disappointment over not being able to implement Sunday work schedules.
While the policy has been announced, specific details regarding its implementation remain unclear. It is yet to be determined when it will come into effect, whether it will be an additional paid leave beyond existing entitlements, and if employees can avail it at any point during their menstrual cycle.
India does not currently have a national law mandating menstrual leave. However, some private companies, including AU Small Finance Bank, Orient Electric, Swiggy, and Zomato, have introduced similar policies to support their women employees.
L&T’s move is seen as a progressive step in an industry that has traditionally lagged behind in gender-inclusive workplace policies. Many experts believe such initiatives can help foster a more supportive and equitable work environment for women across sectors.
