Pune Woman Duped of Rs 59 Lakh in Matrimonial Website Fraud
Chandan Nagar, 23rd February 2026: A 44-year-old resident of Wadgaon Sheri was allegedly defrauded of ₹59.37 lakh by a man she met through a matrimonial website. Chandan Nagar police have registered a case and begun an investigation.
According to police, the woman, who lives off Nagar Road, created a profile on a matrimonial platform in November 2024. Shortly after registering, she was contacted by a man who expressed interest in marrying her. Investigators said he gradually gained her confidence through regular communication and emotional assurances.
Over time, the suspect allegedly began requesting money for various reasons. Trusting him and without verifying his identity or background, the woman transferred funds to bank accounts provided by him over nearly eighteen months. The total amount transferred is estimated at ₹59.37 lakh.
When she later began asking about wedding arrangements, the man reportedly started avoiding her calls and messages. Police said he eventually issued threats to kill her and then switched off his phone after receiving the money.
Realising she had been cheated, the woman approached the police and filed a complaint. Assistant Police Inspector Jagdale is leading the probe.
Officials noted that fraud cases involving false marriage promises have been increasing and advised citizens to verify identities, confirm credentials on matrimonial platforms, and avoid sending money to individuals met online without proper authentication.
