Pune: Woman Loses Eyes In Attack While Resisting Molestation, Police Investigate

Pune, November 5, 2020: In a shocking incident, a 37 years-old-woman lost her eyes in an attack by a youth, after she resisted his attempt to molest her. The incident took place on Tuesday night in Nhavare village, about 60 km from Pune, in Shirur taluka.

An FIR has been registered by Shirur police station, under Pune rural police, against the unidentified accused person. The accused has been booked for offences under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to police, the woman lives with her husband in a tin shed near Gunjan Theatre in Nhavare village. Around 9 pm on November 3, she had gone to answer nature’s call outside the village, when the incident took place. The accused youth tried to molest her and when she resisted, he attacked her with a blunt object on the face. One of her eyes came out while the other got damaged. After hearing she shout for help, local villagers and her husband rushed to the spot. However, the assailant managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness.

The woman was rushed to Sassoon hospital where she is undergoing treatment. She has lost her eyesight.

On Wednesday, senior police officials including Superintendent of Police (Pune rural) Abhinav Deshmukh, Additional SP Milind Mohite, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rahul Dhas and other officers visited the spot.

Even after 48 hours of the attack, police are yet to nab the accused.
