Pune, December 21, 2020: A Pune woman was duped by a self-claimed doctor of Rs 1.48 crore under the pretense of cancer treatment. The incident came to light, when after exhausting all her money, the woman turned to her husband asking to give Rs 7 lakh.

The 58-year-old Sushma Jadhav, an auditor at the Control of Defence Accounts had approached Dr Vidya Gondras, a resident of Wanwadi, six months back, complaining about discomfort in her stomach. Jadhav had first met Gondras through a common friend in her office. The former had consulted the doctor for knee pain in 2017. However, recently when Jadhav contacted Gondras; the doctor informed that she has closed the clinic in January 2020 and now, has taken a Canada-based international ayurvedic franchise here.

According to the complaint report, Jadhav had shown a photo of her navel to Gondras who suggested that she had liver ascites, without any tests. She further told her it’s a cancer type and if not treated on time, it can kill her. Gondras prescribed her a few medicines without prescriptions or tests. The doctor didn’t provide any concrete medical reports to Jadhav about her condition. Most of the payment was done through cheque.

However, it was only after Jadhav exhausted all her money, she demanded Rs 7 lakh from her husband who is a lawyer by profession. When the husband asked about the money, she informed that she was getting treatment for cancer. The husband asked her for medical reports. Jadhav called the doctor and requested to provide a medical report about her condition, to which Gondras refused. Later, on December 3, Jadhav and her husband Gondras sought the medical report. Gondras told them, she can’t provide one unless the treatment is over. Jadhav grew suspicious and realised the doctor was defrauding her.

Jadhav has lodged a complaint against the Gondras at the Wanwadi police station. Meanwhile, the accused doctor has not been arrested yet but both the bank accounts of the accused have been sealed and investigation is underway, informed the police.
