Pune, 14th May 2023: It has been reported that a young man who came to swim in the canal on the backside of Khadakwasla Dam has drowned and the search is on by the personnel of Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Nanded City Fire Station. The drowned youth has been identified as Zubair Ismail Shaikh (28), a resident of Bhawani Peth, Pune.

Zubair along with three other friends had come to swim in the canal behind the Khadakwasla dam around 1.00 pm. Zubair could swim, but the three others who came with him could not swim, so they sat on the bank and watched. Friends screamed as Zubair, who was swimming, suddenly disappeared. Other swimmers also tried to find Zubair but could not find him.

As soon as the fire brigade of PMRDA received information about this, under the guidance of Divisional Fire Officer Sujit Patil, the personnel of Pankaj Mali, Chetan Khamse, Akshay Kale, Atul Rokade and Vitthal Ghode reached the spot and started searching, but at present the summer cycle of 1,054 cusecs is going on in the canal resulting the water speed is high. Due to this, there are obstacles in the search work.

Hundreds of youngsters come from different parts of the city to swim in the canal behind the dam. Many young children perform life-threatening stunts by jumping from the bridge over the canal, from the guard wall, and directly from the wall of the power plant. Those who come to swim for the first time do not anticipate the water, as a result, many have drowned before. The Irrigation Department has also put up a board to prevent people from entering the water at this place, but no one seems to care about it.
