Pune: Youth Drowns in Khadakwasla Canal, Third Drowning Incident Sparks Urgent Safety Concerns

Kirkatwadi, 11th June 2023: A young man drowned in the canal near Yashwant Vidyalaya, located at the backside of Khadakwasla Dam. This unfortunate incident marks the third drowning within a month, causing a wave of concern in the area. Firefighters have been deployed to search for the missing youth.

 

The victim has been identified as Rahul Bhagwan Yewle, a 23-year-old resident of Sinhagad Campus, Pune, originally from Bahirwadi, Nevasa, Ahmednagar district. The authorities are intensifying efforts to locate Rahul as part of the ongoing search and rescue operation.

 

According to reports, Rahul and five of his roommates had visited the canal near Yashwant Vidyalaya for a swim, taking advantage of the holiday. As Rahul and another individual were non-swimmers, they chose to remain by the side while four others enjoyed swimming in the canal.

Tragedy struck when Rahul decided to join his friends in the water. However, he lost his balance and began to sink as soon as he entered the canal. Despite the immediate shouts for help from his teammates, Rahul disappeared beneath the surface.

 

Upon receiving the information, the local authorities, under the guidance of Police Inspector Sachin Wangde, swiftly mobilized a team comprising Police Constable Ajay Patskar, Police Naik Rajendra Mundhe, and Constable Maksud Syed to the spot.

 

Additionally, the PMRDA’s Divisional Fire Officer Sujit Patil promptly organized a search and rescue team, including Firefighters Sonyabapu Nangre, Pankaj Mali, Yogesh Mynale, Sunny Mirgunde, and Suraj Mane. Their efforts are focused on scouring the canal in hopes of finding Rahul and bringing him to safety.
