Pune: Youth Shot in Leg While Playing with Pistol; Friends Initially Mislead Police, Case Registered
Shivane, 4th August 2025: A late-night gathering in Pune’s Shivane area turned serious when a 20-year-old man was accidentally shot in the leg while his friends mishandled a pistol. The group ended up in deeper trouble after initially misleading police about what had really happened.
The incident occurred around 1:20 AM on August 4 under Uttam Nagar Police Station limits. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Sambhaji Kadam stated that the injured youth, Sanket Sanjay Mohite of Saraswati Nagar, was rushed to Sahyadri Hospital in Deccan Gymkhana with a bullet wound to his right leg. Police Sub-Inspector Atul Kshirsagar was alerted and quickly reached the hospital to question Mohite.
At first, Mohite told officers that a 17-year-old acquaintance accidentally shot him while showing off a pistol near Nivrutti Heights. Following this, the police detained the minor for questioning. However, as the inquiry deepened, officers began to spot inconsistencies in the group’s story.
DCP Kadam explained that a more thorough investigation revealed the actual events. Mohite was with his friends Jafar Sadiq Ali Shaikh, Parshvanath Shirish Chakote (25), Vaibhav Laxman Dhawde (22), and Sagar Pradeep Kothari (22) at Jafar’s residence. While the group was playing PUBG, Kothari brought out a pistol and started showing it off. Chakote then took the weapon from him. While Chakote was handling the pistol, it accidentally went off and Mohite was shot in the leg.
Instead of promptly reporting the incident, the friends decided to concoct a false story and wrongly blamed the minor in an attempt to protect themselves. They also misinformed police about the location and circumstances of the shooting.
Police have now registered a suo motu case for misleading law enforcement and concealing the facts of the incident. Investigators are also looking into the source of the firearm and any other potential legal violations. The case remains under active investigation.
