Pune Zilla Parishad Initiates School Merger Plan, May Shut Down 1,000 Schools With Less Than 20 Students
Pune, 4th October 2022: The Zilla Parishad (ZP) of Pune has identified approximately 1,000 schools with fewer than 20 students. While officials have stated that the figures from last year will be updated, schools with low student enrollment will be merged.
Maharashtra State Education Minister directed officials to identify schools with fewer than 20 students. If the school merger decision is implemented, more than 1,000 of the 3,629 schools under the jurisdiction of the Pune ZP may be closed.
Sandhya Gaikwad, Primary Education Officer, Pune ZP, informed Hindustan Times, “We have instructed officers to identify the schools as most are located in remote areas. School merger will help students to continue education.”
Pune ZP has 3,629 primary and secondary schools that educate approximately 2,96,000 students and employ approximately 11,900 teachers.
