Pune, 22nd January 2022: With the support of the Naam Foundation, the MGNREGA Department Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) would help 25,000 households in rural areas to construct soak pits.

The Naam Foundation would support us by donating the construction material, while labour costs would be paid under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Each household would earn Rs 1486 by constructing the soak pit in their homes. Due to this activity, the district would additionally get Rs 2.5 crores funds under MGNREGA that can be used to buy material required for the construction of Animal Sheds, Rural Godowns, Mess for Midday meals etc.

Pune ZP CEO Ayush Prasad said, “Construction of soak pits would help in increasing groundwater by 4 TMC across the district by recycling greywater from kitchens and bathrooms. It will help reduce the cases of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, Chikungunya, filariasis and zika. It would prevent bad odours and ensure low-cost wastewater management.”

He added, “We request people in rural areas in Pune, especially in water-stressed 103 villages and 79 villages with cases of mosquitoes borne diseases to apply for this scheme in their gram panchayats.”
