Pune: Sharayu Deshmukh ( 29) from Pune was awarded ‘Beauty with Purpose’ title at recently concluded Mrs Maharashtra 2017 contest, which sees married ladies across the state shedding their inhibitions on the ramp. She is a director (sales and marketing) with a private firm.

“I always admired actress Aishwarya Rai and her work for a social cause of eye donation. Since childhood, I wanted to participate for the reason to make a difference in society and to work for a social cause and of course to be famous,” recalled Sharayu, who is married and has a four-year-old son.

In 2016, she saw a post on a very popular group on Facebook  ‘Puna Ladies’ (PULA). It was an advertisement about the pageant for the married woman from Mrs Anjana Mascarenhas. “And I started re-living my childhood dreams. I went for Mrs Maharashtra 2016 but I didn’t get selected. Then I participated in Mrs Pune 2017 and got selected. However, it was not workable for me, so I didn’t go ahead,” she added.

In October 2017, she was auditioned for Mrs Maharashtra 2017, organized by Mrs Anjana Mascarenhas Diva Pageant – where more than 300 ladies from across Maharashtra had participated. “I’m among those 40 ladies who cleared the auditions. And I’m among those 20 ladies in my category of age. We all were given tasks to perform for different titles. During the grooming, we had a session on self-image and self-esteem, dressing as per body shape and importance of fitness (few basic things to do daily for fitness). After the grooming, I became more confident about stage performance and to face the camera. I won the title ‘Beauty with Purpose’ for the task to perform a CSR activity. I did an awareness workshop on sexual harassment and child sexual abuse with members of Omkar Mahila Bachat Gat, a women’s self-help group in Kalewadi,” Sharayu said.

Talking about future, she said, “I will engage in such CSR activities on different social issues in future. And in pageantry,  I will hit the India level in 2018.”
