Pune, 2nd September 2022: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) increased rickshaw fares due to the increase in the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Pune on 1st September from Rs 14 to Rs 17 per kilometre.

Rickshaw drivers had initially appealed for an 18 rupee increment, but the RTO allotted an increase of Rs 17 in rates. The move comes in due to the rise in CNG fare from Rs 63 to Rs 87. This hike has not affected the number of people using rickshaws every day.

“Expenses have increased. From tyre rates to petrol, everything is costlier. We feel that the rates are right, seeing the current scenario of expenses,” said Ganesh Shinde, who has been driving an auto for 20 years in Pune city.

Other rickshaw drivers also mentioned that the servicing cost of rickshaws increased extensively. They also said that installing the new meter with the rate changes will cost them at least Rs 500 to Rs 600.

“We, students, do not have access to vehicles, especially those who come from outstation. In such a situation, we rely on autos for commuting. Now that they have increased their rates, how will students like us look for travelling in the city?” said Dhruv Falodia, a student at MIT World Peace University.

This increment has not affected the number of people using rickshaws every day. People still use them to commute at rates comparatively cheaper than fuel. The hike is clearly due to the rise in the price of CNG. This increment is also subject to areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Baramati.
