Pune, 8th November 2022: Dr Sudhir Mehta, former President of the Maratha Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), took to Twitter to ask citizens of Pune their opinions and suggestions to better the city.

“How can we collectively and collaboratively help improve the aesthetics of our beloved city? What policy changes or upgrades can really help change the visual appeal of Pune?” he tweeted on the evening of 5th November. Mehta received multiple replies from citizens and officials, with suggestions across varied fields.

Individuals commented with suggestions regarding hoardings, garbage control, footpaths, rivers, roads, and other issues. Amit Paranjape, Tech Entrepreneur, commented, “Eliminate all illegal political, commercial hoardings and banners; Reduce the number of legal hoardings – revisit sky signs policy; Focus on small details – road dividers, intersections, open areas; Good maintenance of shrubs around roads; Basic housekeeping.”

On the other hand, the official handle of Pune City Watch commented, “Usable, encroachment and tapri free footpaths; Enforce tobacco ban and public smoking ban; Consistent footpath, road signs, city place signs, speed breakers, dividers and signals; Total ban on political posters and hoarding; Timely garbage collection.”

“River cleaning should be one of our top priority. People are ready to contribute, but we don’t have correct platform where we can meet each other and contribute. Infrastructure needs lot of improvement – probably we can invite @nitin_gadkari for long term stay in Pune,” Amit Singh suggested.

Meanwhile, commenting on the city’s miserable road conditions, Ankur Sharma stated, “Look at the road designs and work towards redesigning those keeping in mind health and safety e.g. dividers, markings, consistent width, one-way service roads, painting circles as junctions, barriers around busy roads, instilling road safety behaviour and civic sense.” “Remove BRT roads to reduce traffic flower plants on road dividers; Trees on both sides of the road wherever possible; Pothole-free roads,” Prashant Kotkar commented.

Collective suggestions were also made regarding the removal of hoardings, reduction of garbage, stopping encroachments on the footpath, river cleaning, bettering roads, policies, laws, and action from authorities.
