Pune, 12th November 2024: Pune, a city steeped in rich history, is set to make history again on January 15, 2025, as it hosts the prestigious Army Day Parade for the first time. Traditionally held in Delhi, this significant event’s move to Pune is a fitting tribute to the city’s deep-rooted military heritage and the role it has played in shaping India’s defence legacy.

Pune’s Military Heritage dates back to the Khadki War of 1817, a defining battle between the Marathas and the British East India Company. This pivotal encounter not only reshaped Indian history but also laid the foundation for Pune’s status as a strategic military hub. Following this, the Pune Cantonment was established, making it one of India’s most prominent military establishments. Over time, Pune has evolved into a core site for military research and operations.

Guarding India’s borders since 1895, Pune has served as the headquarters for the Indian Army’s Southern Command. This command, one of the largest in India, plays an instrumental role in the security of the nation’s southern regions and has led numerous successful operations that highlight India’s military strength and resilience. The Southern Command is a testament to Pune’s enduring importance in national defence.

As a Hub of Defence Institutions and technological innovation, Pune boasts several renowned defence establishments that underscore its military prominence. The National Defence Academy (NDA), which shapes future leaders of the Armed Forces, and the College of Military Engineering (CME), a Centre of technical excellence, are both located here. Additionally, premier defence research centers like the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and the Research & Development Establishment (Engineers) [R&DE] further strengthen Pune’s role in national defence. These institutions have pioneered technological advancements, including the development of the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher and robotics, making Pune a crucial contributor to India’s defence capabilities.

The upcoming Army Day Parade in Pune is not only a historic milestone for the city but a monumental event for the entire nation. This parade will be a grand tribute to the brave soldiers who protect our borders, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and dedication. Southern Command’s soldiers have been integral to India’s military history, participating in numerous significant operations that have safeguarded the country.

The people of Pune will have a unique opportunity to engage with the Indian Army in the days leading up to the parade. Events like the “Know Your Army” exhibition in the first week of January will allow the public to experience the latest military equipment and connect with the soldiers who guard their freedom. This exhibition, anticipated to draw thousands, will showcase exciting technological displays that highlight the Indian Army’s prowess and modern capabilities.

A Celebration of Unity and Gratitude as Pune takes the honour of hosting the Army Day Parade for the first time, let us unite in a show of pride and respect for the courageous men and women who stand as our nation’s defenders. This historic occasion calls on citizens to join in celebrating the Army’s valour and resilience, making this Army Day Parade a truly memorable event for the city and the country.
