Shivajinagar, 14th July 2025: In a major setback to one of Pune’s most iconic eateries, Cafe Goodluck on Fergusson College (FC) Road has been temporarily shut down by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after a video alleging food safety violations went viral on social media as reported by Punekar News earlier.

The video, which showed glass shards allegedly found inside the café’s popular bun maska, prompted swift action by authorities. A couple who visited the cafe claimed to have discovered the glass fragments in their food and posted the video online, sparking public outrage and concern.

FDA Inspection Reveals Serious Violations
Taking cognizance of the viral video, the FDA immediately carried out an inspection of the premises. Joint Commissioner Suresh Annapure confirmed that multiple hygiene violations were found during the visit.

“Our inspection revealed a lack of basic cleanliness at the establishment,” Annapure said. “The kitchen had broken tiles, the refrigerator used to store food was unclean, and the dustbin was open and filled with stagnant water. These are serious breaches of food safety standards.”

The inspection also uncovered missing documentation related to employee health check-ups and water quality testing, which are mandatory under food safety regulations.

License Suspended, Samples Sent for Testing
Following the inspection, the FDA temporarily suspended the cafe’s food license and issued an order to cease operations until all deficiencies are rectified. Samples of the bun maska have been sent to a laboratory for further analysis.

“The cafe will remain closed until it complies with all food safety norms and we are satisfied with the corrective measures taken,” Annapure added.

An Iconic Cafe Under Fire
Established in 1935, Cafe Goodluck is widely regarded as one of Pune’s most historic Irani cafés and a popular student hangout. Known for its bun maska, chai, and keema pav, the café has long been a landmark on FC Road.

The recent incident, however, has raised questions about hygiene and safety in even the most established food outlets. Locals and regular patrons have expressed shock and disappointment, while many are calling for stricter monitoring of eateries across the city.
