Shivajinagar, 12th June 2023: Pune, renowned for its cultural heritage, witnessed a mesmerizing display of tradition as delegates from around the world attending the G-20 ‘Digital Economy Working Group’ meeting immersed themselves in the grandeur of Maharashtra’s cultural richness.

The delegates had the unique opportunity to experience the sacred Palkhi ceremony, a cherished tradition of the region. The event took place at the entrance of Fergusson College near the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Paduka Mandir, with arrangements made by the administration and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Under the watchful eyes of Pune District Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil, a dedicated pavilion was set up to provide an authentic encounter with the Palkhi ceremony for the G-20 delegates. The dignitaries were warmly welcomed by Guardian Minister Patil, accompanied by distinguished personalities such as Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, Pune Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, District Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik, and Municipal Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne.

The ceremonial extravaganza commenced with the resounding beats of the drums and the attendees adorned with tulsimala, Warkari uparna (stole), and caps. As the Dindi, the groups of devotees, started to arrive on the Palkhi route, a spectacle of vibrant colors and jubilant faces unfolded before the delegates’ eyes. With saffron flags held high, women Warkari balancing Tulsi plants on their heads, taal, mridanga, and veena playing in harmony, the chants of ‘Ram Krishna Hari’ and ‘Dyanoba Mauli Tukaram’ filled the air. The enchanting sound of abhangs (devotional poetry) resonated, while balloons soared high and dancers gracefully swayed to the rhythm. The delegates found themselves captivated by this extraordinary experience. Some representatives were blessed with a tilak, a sacred mark, on their foreheads by the devout Warkari.
