Pune: Journalist Targeted In Sensational Firing Incident, Investigation Underway
Swargate, 12th June 2023: A journalist had a narrow escape on Sunday evening as unknown assailants opened fire on him in the Maharshinagar area near Swargate, Pune. The incident occurred at approximately 9.15 PM.
Harshad Kantilal Kataria, a 39-year-old resident of Nayantara Society, Maharshinagar, filed a complaint regarding the incident. The Swargate Police Station promptly registered a case against the unidentified individuals under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Police Act and the Maharashtra Media Persons and Media Institutions (prevention of violence and damage or loss to property) Act.
According to the police investigation, Kataria was returning home on his two-wheeler when two unknown persons on another motorcycle approached him from behind. The pillion rider allegedly fired a gunshot towards him before fleeing the spot. The motive behind the attack remains unclear at this stage.
This disturbing incident follows a previous threat against Kataria’s life on May 27, when an assailant threw chilli powder into his eyes in front of City International School in Maharshinagar. The police were already investigating the earlier incident when this latest attempt on his life occurred.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Smartana Patil, ACP (Swargate Division) Narayan Shirgaonkar, Senior Police Inspector Ashok Indalkar, and Assistant Police Inspector Prashant Sande, visited the crime scene upon receiving the information. The investigation is being carried out by Police Sub-Inspector Ashok Yewle.
The Swargate police have registered a case in connection with the incident and are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area to gather more evidence. Additional Commissioner of Police Pravin Kumar Patil emphasized the seriousness of the matter and assured that every effort would be made to bring the culprits to justice.
