Pune, 1st November 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has kick-started construction of a new series of ‘Smart Public Toilets’ across key entry points of the city, marking a significant move to enhance urban hygiene and commuter convenience.

The project, valued at ₹4.31 crore, is being executed under the Solid Waste Management Department and includes five major locations — Balewadi, Shewalwadi, Katraj, Wagholi, and Swargate. These sites were selected for their high footfall and connectivity, serving as gateways for thousands of daily commuters.

According to officials, construction is already underway at Balewadi’s PMPML depot, while work at Shewalwadi and Wagholi will begin next week. The remaining two sites, Katraj Chowk and Swargate, will follow soon after. The PMC expects all facilities to be completed and open to the public by March 2026.

PMC officials stated that the project follows the model implemented in Nagpur, and is part of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s directive to create clean, modern, and inclusive sanitation spaces for citizens and travelers.

“Smart public toilets are being constructed at five entry points for the convenience of commuters. The facilities will be operational by March 2026,” said Sandeep Kadam, Head of the Solid Waste Management Department. Assistant Engineer Ajit Naiknavare confirmed that work is progressing as scheduled.

Each smart unit will feature air-conditioned interiors, modern bathrooms with changing rooms, Wi-Fi and charging ports, separate sections for men, women, and transgender individuals, and barrier-free access for persons with disabilities. Dedicated maintenance staff will ensure regular upkeep and repairs.

Officials said the initiative aims to resolve the long-standing issue faced by visitors and daily commuters who often struggle to find clean and accessible facilities in Pune.
Once completed, the project is expected to set a new benchmark for public sanitation, positioning Pune among India’s most hygiene-conscious urban centers.
