Pune, 13th March 2026: Pune’s small and medium enterprises continue to demonstrate strong confidence in their growth prospects even as global markets experience volatility driven by geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions. National indicators suggest that Indian SMEs remain on an expansion trajectory, supported by resilient domestic demand and strategic business planning. According to the SIDBI MSME Outlook Survey for Q2 FY26, optimism softened slightly due to tariff pressures, but expectations for the coming quarters remain positive, aided by festive consumption, stable market demand and supportive policy measures such as GST rationalisation.

This sentiment is reinforced by the PHD Chamber’s SME Market Sentiment Index, which shows that enterprises across India are preparing for higher capital expenditure despite concerns around demand and employment. Improved supplier delivery timelines and proactive inventory strategies indicate that businesses are gearing up for increased activity in the near term.

Pune continues to stand out as one of India’s most dynamic SME ecosystems. The district is home to over 4.5 lakh registered MSMEs including nearly 1 lakh manufacturing units and 3.5 lakh service sector enterprises making it one of Maharashtra’s largest and most vibrant MSME hubs. Its unique blend of engineering strength, auto component manufacturing, IT services, precision production and steady talent availability provides a competitive edge, especially during periods of global uncertainty. Local SMEs are actively investing in diversification, technology upgrades and export expansion, reinforcing their ability to sustain growth despite external challenges.

Highlighting this resilience, Shekhar Bhandari, President SME at Kotak Mahindra Bank, noted that “India’s SMEs, particularly those in industrial hubs like Pune, are displaying exceptional clarity and ambition. Their disciplined, long-term approach positions them not as small players but as conglomerates in the making, driven by a strong hunger for growth and the pursuit of sustainable, multi decade business models.”

To meet rising demand from such fast-growing enterprise clusters, Kotak Mahindra Bank is expanding its presence across major MSME hubs including Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Kolhapur. This expansion strengthens Kotak’s ability to support SMEs with deeper regional engagement and faster financial access.

The broader Pune region, including Ahmednagar, Baramati, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, forms a well-connected and vibrant SME corridor that amplifies this confidence. With strong industrial clusters, skilled talent, robust infrastructure and a deep entrepreneurial ethos, the region enables SME expansion across manufacturing, services and emerging sectors.

This optimism is visible across Pune’s major industrial zones such as Chakan, Talegaon, Ranjangaon and Hinjawadi. Enterprises here are advancing automation, enhancing supply chain resilience, developing specialised products and strengthening customer networks. These trends align with national findings that show SMEs prioritising efficiency, resilience and selective investment to navigate evolving global conditions.

Industry observers note that Pune’s SMEs distinguish themselves through a strategic and future oriented approach supported by improving logistics and strong domestic fundamentals.

As a result, they are not just weathering global uncertainty but converting it into sustained growth opportunities.

SMEs in Pune and across India remain central to the country’s economic progress, driven by ambition, resilience and long-term vision.
