Pune, 19th August 2025: After months of delays and growing frustration among commuters, the long-awaited University Road flyover is finally set to open for public use on Wednesday, August 20. Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole announced the inauguration through a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“The flyover connecting Pune University Chowk to the RBI stretch will be operational from tomorrow. This will significantly ease traffic congestion and provide much-needed relief to daily commuters,” Shirole wrote.

The MLA said he carried out a joint inspection of the site on Monday along with Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Commissioner Yogesh Mhase, senior Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, traffic police representatives, and project contractors.

Speaking about the project, Shirole said, “This flyover is designed to decongest one of Pune’s busiest routes and save valuable commuting time. Our focus is to create sustainable and future-ready infrastructure that enhances the overall quality of life for every Punekar.”

Delays spark anger among citizens
The flyover, originally expected to open in May, remained closed past its deadline. Residents often questioned whether construction was incomplete, or if the inauguration was being deliberately postponed.
MNS workers staged symbolic inauguration
The repeated postponements had earlier triggered protests from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Party workers, accusing officials of unnecessarily delaying the project, carried out a symbolic inauguration last month. They broke coconuts and cut ribbons at the site in a traditional ceremony, highlighting public anger over the prolonged wait.

With the official opening now scheduled, thousands of Pune residents are hopeful that one of the city’s most congested stretches will finally see smoother traffic flow.
