Pune’s Water Supply Under Strain As 13 TMC Allocated For Next 10 Months
Pune, 30th October 2026: Pune’s water-cut concerns are set to continue despite the Khadakwasla canal advisory committee allocating 13 TMC of water to the city for the next 10 months, less than the municipal corporation’s demand.
Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said water cuts would be unavoidable and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would have to decide their extent. Deputy Chief Minister and guardian minister Sunetra Pawar said the government would ensure a balanced distribution of water between urban and rural areas.
The decision was taken at a canal advisory committee meeting chaired by Pawar on Thursday. The meeting reviewed available water stock in the dams, drinking water requirements and irrigation needs. The civic body has been asked to plan its consumption within the 13 TMC allocation.
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure said a meeting of civic officials would be held within two days to decide on the extent of water cuts. She appealed to residents to use water judiciously and expressed confidence that they would continue to cooperate with the civic administration.
Pawar directed the PMC and the water resources department to ensure transparent implementation of the water distribution plan, promote conservation and public awareness, and set up dedicated control rooms at every ward office. She also asked the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation to take necessary precautionary measures.
Vikhe-Patil said drinking water would receive priority while planning supplies until August 31 next year. The allocation would have to account for urban and rural drinking water requirements, irrigation and livestock needs.
