Pune: PMC’s 15 Ward Offices Told To Set Up 24×7 Control Rooms To Curb Water Leakage, Theft
Pune, 30 October 2026: With the city facing the possibility of a water shortage, mayor Manjusha Nagpure has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to set up dedicated water scarcity and disaster management control rooms at all 15 ward offices to ensure close monitoring of water supply, prevent leakage and curb water theft.
The control rooms will have officials and staff from the water supply, health and disaster management departments working round the clock. They have also been instructed to resolve citizens’ complaints related to water supply, leakage and tanker requirements within 24 hours.
Nagpure has asked the civic administration to take immediate measures to conserve every drop of water, keeping in view the limited stock available in the dams supplying the city.
Each ward office has been directed to operate a 24-hour helpline and WhatsApp-based grievance redressal system. Special teams will be deployed to detect leakages in main pipelines, distribution networks and water storage tanks. The administration has also been asked to crack down on unauthorised water connections and theft.
The mayor has further sought restrictions on the use of drinking water for washing vehicles, private construction activities, swimming pools, gardens and cleaning roads. Violators should face penalties and disconnection of their water supply, the directions stated.
The PMC has also been asked to provide free water tankers in shortage-hit areas, regulate rates charged by private tanker operators and prevent the black marketing of water.
Nagpure has directed officials to ensure equitable and adequate water supply, including in localities at the farthest ends of the city. The administration has been asked to submit a detailed action-taken report on all these measures to the mayor’s office within three days.
