QR Code Fraud: Wakad Woman Cheated Of Rs 53,000 By Unknown Caller

Wakad, February 15, 2021: A 30-year-old woman was looted of  Rs 52,993 by an unknown caller claiming to be a pandit (priest) on Sunday (February 14).

The woman received a call from a person claiming to be a pandit and said that he was going to deposit money into her bank account.  He then asked her to scan a QR code and cheated her by withdrawing Rs52,993 from the woman’s bank account. The incident took place on Sunday at 4 pm at Venu Nagar in Wakad.

Sneha Kailas Rajguru (30), a resident of Ambegaon Budruk in Pune,  has lodged a complaint at Wakad police station.

Accordingly, a case has been registered against a person with phone number 9587125196 and another mobile number holder.

According to the police, the woman’s aunt lives at Venu Nagar in Wakad. While visiting her aunt, the girl received a call from an unknown number at around 4 pm on Sunday.

The caller claimed that he was a pandit and sent her a QR code saying that he was depositing money into the woman’s bank account. He asked the woman to scan the QR code. When the woman did as said, he fraudulently withdrew Rs 52,993 from her account.

A case has been registered against the stranger under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The Wakad police are investigating the case further.
