Pune, 1st December 2022: This year, heavy rains and return rains caused great damage to crops. However, rabi season sowing has increased as the state has been watered by heavy rains. As compared to last year, in the state at the end of November this year, rabi jowar was 102 per cent, wheat 160 per cent, maize 140 per cent, rabi bajri, other cereals including oat barley 114 per cent, gram 152 per cent, rabi moong, udi, matki, poppy, lentil etc pulses 211 per cent, 144 per cent of oilseeds such as linseed, sesame, sunflower mustard, groundnut, and others have been cultivated. Most sowing has been done in the Kolhapur division. Amravati and Konkan divisions are lagging.

The area under cotton is large in North Maharashtra, Marathwada, Varhad and Vidarbha. Due to damage due to heavy rains, the cotton in Shiwar has been exhausted in two-three pickings. Due to the availability of water, about six lakh hectares of cotton in this region will also come under rabi. So there will be good growth in the field of the rabbi.

Water availability is good throughout the state. An increase in rabi season sowing is seen in an attempt to compensate for the loss in Kharif. As a result of increased irrigation facilities and good rainfall, the area of rabi is likely to increase to 65 lakh hectares this year.
