Railway News: New Reservation System to Boost Ticket Booking from 32K to 1.5 Lakh Per Minute by Year-End

Reported By Amit Singh
New Delhi, 02nd July 2025: Indian Railways is set to roll out a modernised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) capable of processing more than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute by December 2025, significantly increasing the current booking capacity of 32,000 tickets per minute.
The Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the status of the PRS upgradation project, which is being implemented by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). The new system is designed to be agile, flexible, and scalable, enabling it to handle ten times the present operational load.
Along with the fivefold increase in booking capacity, the enquiry system will also be upgraded to handle over 40 lakh queries per minute—up from the current 4 lakh. The new PRS will include a multilingual and user-friendly interface, fare calendars, seat selection options, and integrated support features for Divyangjan, students, and patients.
The upgraded system is part of broader efforts to streamline ticketing and improve the passenger experience. Alongside the system overhaul, Indian Railways is introducing early reservation charting to provide more certainty for waitlisted passengers. The reservation chart for trains departing before 2 PM will now be prepared at 9 PM the previous day, allowing travelers more time to plan alternate arrangements.
In another reform, started July 1, 2025, only authenticated users will be permitted to book Tatkal tickets through IRCTC’s website and app. OTP-based authentication will be implemented by the end of July, and further verification via Aadhaar or other government IDs through DigiLocker is also planned.
The new PRS is expected to be operational by the end of this year.
