Delhi, 22 Febuary 2023: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a new facility that enables all inbound travelers visiting India to make local payments using Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Effective immediately, eligible travelers from G-20 countries can use UPI at select international airports in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi. Additionally, delegates from G20 countries can also avail of this facility at various meeting venues.

To take advantage of this new service, travelers will be issued Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) wallets linked to UPI for making payments at merchant outlets. ICICI Bank, IDFC First Bank, Pine Labs Private Limited, and Transcorp International Limited are the first institutions to issue UPI-linked wallets.

This new development allows travelers to experience the convenience of UPI payments at over five crore merchant outlets across India, which accept QR Code-based UPI payments. The RBI’s latest move is expected to enhance the country’s digital payments infrastructure and make it easier for international visitors to transact while in India.
