DRI seizes Around 102 kg smuggled gold worth Rs 51 crore in Golden Dawn Operation across India, including Pune

Pune, 22 febuary 2023: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has recently conducted a nationwide operation, named Golden Dawn, to bust a gold smuggling syndicate operated by Sudanese nationals through Nepal’s border. The DRI officials intercepted several individuals in different locations across India, including Pune, and seized a total of 101.7 kg of smuggled gold, valued at ₹51 crore.

In Pune, two Sudanese lady nationals were intercepted while traveling from Hyderabad to Mumbai via bus on 20.02.2023. The DRI officers recovered 5.615 kg of smuggled gold in assorted form concealed in their handbags. This interception was a crucial part of the Golden Dawn Operation, as it provided a lead to further follow-up actions in Mumbai.

Acting swiftly on the leads provided by the smugglers/carriers, the DRI officers recovered about 20.2 kg smuggled gold in assorted forms along with ₹74 lakh worth foreign currency and ₹63 lakh Indian currency from different premises in Mumbai being used for extraction/storage of smuggled gold. Three persons were apprehended in this follow-up action.

 

The Golden Dawn Operation is another successful effort by the DRI to curb gold smuggling into India through various novel modus operandi used by smugglers. The investigation is still ongoing, and so far, the DRI has arrested seven Sudanese and three Indian nationals.
