Record Meat, Fish, and Chicken Sales in Pune as Gatari Amavasya Celebrated Ahead of Shravan
Pune, 24th July 2025: Pune’s meat, fish, and chicken markets witnessed a surge in sales on Wednesday as residents across the city observed Gatari Amavasya ahead of the holy month of Shravan. Traditionally, many Puneites avoid non-vegetarian food on Thursdays and throughout Shravan. This led to crowded scenes at major markets such as Ganesh Peth, Kasba Peth, Vishrantwadi, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Market as consumers stocked up on mutton, seafood, and poultry for celebratory gatherings.
According to traders, demand peaked for popular seafood varieties like pomfret, surmai, prawns, rawas, and fresh bombil, with Ganesh Peth fish market receiving an estimated 20-25 tons of deep-sea fish and substantial arrivals of river fish and Andhra-imported varieties. Mutton shop owners reported that 2,500–3,000 goats and sheep were sold in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, as confirmed by the local mutton sellers’ association. Chicken also saw high demand, with sales reaching around 600–700 tons citywide according to the Pune Boiler Association.
Restaurant owners contributed to the spike by purchasing large quantities of mutton, while egg prices dropped, offering consumers additional value for their celebrations. Standard retail prices spanned Rs 780 per kg for mutton, Rs 200 per kg for chicken, pomfret at Rs 1,200–Rs 1,800 per kg, surmai and rawas at Rs 1,000 per kg, and prawns (kolambi) at Rs 400–Rs 700 per kg.
Not only this, but during the holy month of Shravan, even the alcohol-loving community refrains from drinking liquor. That’s why, due to Gatari Amavasya, liquor was sold and consumed in greater quantities, bars and shops have reported.
