Pune 1st Sept 2023: The Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Sangola constituency of Solapur Shahaji Bapu Patil has raised a demand to release water from dams in Pune to fulfil the need of water supply in Solapur district. He said that the situation is Solapur district is worsening and the farmers are also struggling due to lack of rain.

“In order to supply drinking water to Solapur along with Pandharpur, Sangola and other municipalities and one round of water to sustain the crops in Solapur district, around 14 TMC of water is required from Ujani Dam. However, since it is not possible to release this much water from Ujani Dam now, 2 TMC water from five different dams of Pune district and 4 TMC of water from Ujani Dam should be released so that the drinking water can be supplied to citizens in Solapur district and the crops can also be sustained” Shahaji Bapu said.

He also said that he will raise this demand in the Canal Advisory meeting scheduled on September 2. Most of the districts in Maharashtra are under the shadow of draught and if there is no good rainfall in the next 15 days we will request the state government to declare draught in Maharashtra, he added.

There are a total of 18 dams in Pune district from where the water goes to Ujani Dam whenever they start overflowing. However, these dams are not filled due to less rainfall this year and the water supply has not reached Ujani Dam due to which the situation of water crisis is likely to arise in Solapur district.
