Rising Temperatures Drive Lemon Prices In Pune; Price To Increase If Temperature Continues To Rise: Traders

Market Yard, 19th February 2025: With soaring temperatures, fruit juice stalls in Pune are witnessing increased footfall, and household demand for lemons has surged. As a result, lemon prices in the wholesale market have risen by 10% to 20% in just a week, leading to higher retail prices as well. Depending on quality, a single lemon is now being sold for ₹3 to ₹7 in local markets.
According to traders, the Market Yard wholesale market currently receives 800 to 1,000 sacks of lemons daily. Each sack contains between 450 to 550 lemons, depending on size. Last week, wholesale prices ranged from ₹400 to ₹700 per sack, but this week, prices have escalated to ₹500 to ₹1,100 per sack, depending on quality.
Lemons are primarily arriving from Shrigonda in Ahilya Nagar district and Barshi in Solapur district, supplying both city retailers and district markets. Last summer, lemon prices peaked as demand soared, with supplies coming from Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu. Given the current trend, traders anticipate further price hikes if the heat continues to rise.
