Rs 1 Lakh Fine for Tree Cutting During Holi: PMC’s Strict Action
Pune, 12th March 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced a ₹1 lakh fine for individuals found cutting trees for Holi celebrations. Following multiple incidents of illegal tree felling during Holika Dahan, the civic body has issued a strict warning and will take punitive action against offenders.
Every year, large amounts of cow dung and wood are used for Holika Dahan in Pune and its surrounding areas. However, authorities have observed illegal tree-cutting in forested areas, riverbanks, and other locations within the city limits. This year, the PMC administration will closely monitor such activities and ensure strict enforcement of regulations.
Legal Framework and Penalty
Under the Maharashtra Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 2021, cutting or burning trees without a permit is a punishable offense. In line with this law, the PMC will impose a ₹1 lakh fine on violators.
To curb such incidents, the PMC has also launched a helpline number where citizens can report illegal tree-cutting. The civic body has urged residents to cooperate and help protect the city’s green cover.
