Pune, 28th November 2019: Adding another feather to it’s cap, Ruby Hall Clinic celebrated the occasion of Founder’s Day — the birthday of it’s founding father Padmabhushan Late Dr. K.B. Grant— with the launch of a new ICU unit in the hospital. With 14 additional beds, ICU 3 is the third addition to the already existing ICU set-up at the hospital, and is set to make the amalgamated ICU complex one of the largest in the city of Pune. It was inaugurated by two long-stint ICU patients, Anne Varghese and Rupali Pawar who stayed in the ICU for over 90 days and 45 days respectively.

Dr. Prachee Sathe, Director ICU, Ruby Hall Clinic said, “This new ICU will be a step-down unit which is equipped for a transition from intensive to in-room care. As a tertiary ICU set-up, we see some of the sickest patients who battle between life and death. Often times, they need life support systems and can be in the ICU for days at a time, even after coming off life support. This step-down unit will provide a safe environment for post-ICU patients to recover before they are stable enough to be transferred to the general wards.”

Stepdown units – also known as transitional care units – provide a path of safety for patients who were once critically ill, and are trying to make their way to the general wards and then home. Functioning as a transition between the ICU and the general floor, these units provide specialised care to patients who are not quite stable enough for general wards, and not quite ill enough for the ICU but still require close monitoring by expert staff who know how to think critically and intervene rapidly. The fourteen bedded unit at Ruby Hall Clinic is designed to provide specialised care to patients who require continuous monitoring with state-of-the-art monitoring systems, critical care technology, and professional expertise.

Present at the inauguration, ECMO patient and dengue survivor Anne Varghese said, “Having spent such a long and critical time at the ICU, I consider them a part of my extended family. My family and I placed our complete faith and trust in the entire team at the hospital and I’ve experienced first-hand the love of God through the hands of the doctors and nurses. While the word ICU invokes fear in so many people, I have come to understand that it is not a place to fear, but a place where miracles are made possible. The love and care showered upon me makes this unit the ‘I Care Unit’ and I consider it a privilege to inaugurate this new set-up.” Another patient Rupali Pawar added, “ Dr. Prachee Sathe and her entire team gave me a new lease of life and are equal to God for me. I couldn’t be more thankful.”

Mr. Bomi Bhote, CEO, Ruby Hall Clinic commented, “The ICU was one of the first and most advanced in the city, and the addition of the step-down unit too is noteworthy. It ensures that the continuum of care provided to our patients is nothing the but the best and that the flow of treatment remains uninterrupted. Our patients have always been at the heart of our care and this has always been the foundation stone of our hospital. It is indeed a fitting honour to launch this unit on the special occasion of Founder’s Day.”
