Pune, 29th November 2022: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has decided to establish a ‘Multidisciplinary Centre’ following the new National Education Policy. Under this, multidisciplinary knowledge generation and research will be emphasized, and credit-based courses will be implemented. The multidisciplinary centre is expected to be operational in the next academic year.

The aim of establishing this centre is to find solutions to problems by combining the knowledge of many disciplines beyond the cognitive limitations of the current prevailing single-subject system. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr Sanjeev Sonawane, explained that the objectives of the centre are to create interdisciplinary knowledge, to apply this knowledge to solve problems, to integrate the knowledge of various faculties without getting stuck in any one faculty, and to create researchers for multidisciplinary knowledge creation and application.

No problem in the world can be solved based on niche knowledge. Various subjects are needed for that. Therefore, experts from various fields and faculties will be brought together under a multidisciplinary centre. Through that, it will be possible to conduct studies and research related to various faculties like technology, language, information science, and communication. It has been decided to establish a study board for this centre and to implement it from the academic year 2023-24, Sonawane mentioned.

The courses conducted under the multidisciplinary centre can be pursued by the students of any course. For this, the concept of a Credit House will be implemented. Therefore, the students who complete the course will get credits for it, said Dr Sonawane.
