Savitribai Phule Pune University Struggling to Fund Research

Pune, 20th March 2025: Despite the importance of research in various rankings, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is struggling to provide funds for research. It is seen that the provisions made by Pune University in the budget are not being fully utilized.

The university had made a provision of Rs 3.5 crore in the budget to provide scope for college-level research, out of which only Rs 2.26 crore 6 thousand 649 has been distributed.

The budget session of SPPU will be held on March 22. The members of the Management Council have answered the questions asked by the members for the session. Where, Shantanu Lamdhade, Dr. Prashant Hire, and Dr. Neeta Mohite have asked questions regarding the expenditure incurred by the university for research. These questions have been answered by Dr. Sangeeta Jagtap, and Dr. Nitin Ghorpade.

According to the Management Council Members, the university received 127 research projects as per the grant received in the financial year 2024-25. Also, a grant of Rs. 10 lakh 28 thousand 500 was approved for 10 professors under the Aspire Research Mentorship Program scheme. The university had made a provision of Rs 4.9 crore for research grants in the financial year 2024-25. Various academic departments of the university received Rs 1.4 crore through budgetary provision through the university, as well as Rs 25.75 crore 15 thousand 457 from various institutions.

Responding to the question regarding the pending proposals for Ph.D. guidance approval, Management Council member Ravindra Shinganapurkar stated, “A total of 264 proposals are pending with the university for approval. This includes 160 from the Science branch, 59 from the Commerce and Management branch, 36 from the Engineering branch, and nine from the Interdisciplinary Studies branch.”
