Pune, 28th February 2025: From the dawn of civilization to modern agriculture, seeds have remained the foundation of human survival and cultural expression. The ‘Seed Stories’ project, developed by the Goethe-Institut Pune, seeks to highlight the ecological and cultural significance of India’s indigenous seed diversity through art, science, and storytelling.

Curated by photographer and seed collector Abhijit Patil, the initiative invites artists, scientists, and seed conservationists to rediscover the heritage of seeds beyond their role as commodities. Instead, the project showcases them as living symbols of culture, resilience, and hope—reflecting both their historical struggle against commercialization and their enduring power to sustain life.

An Exhibition of Art, Agriculture, and Identity
From March 1 to 11, 2025, ‘Seed Stories’ will transform The Monalisa Kalagram into a dynamic cultural space where art and agriculture converge. The exhibition will feature diverse artistic expressions, including paintings, sculptures, photography, design, poetry, dance, and even a display of indigenous seed varieties. Alongside the visual and performing arts, lectures and workshops will provide deeper insights into the rich interconnections between seeds, sustainability, and cultural identity.

A Collective of Visionary Artists
A stellar lineup of artists will bring their unique interpretations to this theme, including Aabha Soumitra, Abhijit Patil, Debangshu Moulik, Jayraj Patil, Jignesh Mistry, Ketaki Nirmala, Kokila Bhattacharya, Philipp Geist, Rajita Schade, Rajyashri Goody, Rupali Patil, Sachin Mali, Sayli Kulkarni, Seetai Creations, Sheena Maria Piedade, Shital Sathe, Shruthi Vishwanath, Shweta Bhattad, Vaishali Oak, and Yana Wernicke. Their works will explore themes of biodiversity, indigenous knowledge, and the impact of industrialization on seed sovereignty.

Building the Seed Stories Library
At the heart of this initiative is the Seed Stories Library, a project led by Patil in collaboration with local organizations across Maharashtra. This evolving archive aims to preserve seed diversity and revive traditional knowledge through storytelling, fostering awareness and conservation.

A Space Rooted in Culture and Nature
Set amidst the serene Pingale Farms, The Monalisa Kalagram provides the perfect setting for this introspective yet forward-thinking exhibition. The venue’s commitment to promoting cultural and environmental consciousness aligns seamlessly with the ethos of the Seed Stories project.

As climate change and industrial farming threaten biodiversity, ‘Seed Stories’ serves as a timely reminder of the crucial role seeds play in our past, present, and future. Through the convergence of art, ecology, and heritage, the exhibition hopes to inspire a deeper appreciation for these tiny yet powerful vessels of life.

For those who believe that every seed carries a story, this exhibition is an invitation to listen, learn, and preserve them for generations to come.
