Khadakwasla, 18th October 2023: A large stock of medical supplies was found discarded in the waters of Khadakwasla Dam, which serves as a primary source of drinking water for lakhs of Pune residents. Haveli Police Station officials and the Irrigation Department have rushed to the scene, and a panchanama is in progress.

Around noon today, security personnel stationed at the Khadakwasla Dam noticed multiple medicine boxes floating near the Chowpatty area. A closer look revealed various items, including injections and small medicine bottles, directly thrown into the water. The guards immediately alerted the Irrigation Department officials, who then informed the police.

The Irrigation Department has since retrieved the medicine bottles, and broken glass was observed at the scene. Executive Engineer Shweta Kurhade of the Irrigation Department and Police Inspector Sachin Wangde of Haveli Police Station were contacted for comments but did not respond.

The incident has exposed glaring gaps in the dam’s security, particularly in the Chowpatty area where there is no night-time surveillance. Thirteen security guards are deployed throughout the day, but none at night in the affected area. This lapse raises critical concerns about the safety of the dam and, by extension, Pune’s residents.

The shocking discovery has further intensified ongoing dialogues about the dam’s security, leading to calls for enhanced measures, including 24-hour security deployment.
