Sinhgad College shines at Vidyarthi Awards for Civil Engineering

, 2018: City based Non- Government Organisation (NGO), Pune Construction Engineering Research Foundation (PCERF) working principally in the field of Construction and allied areas initiated the Vidyarthi Awards to encourage excellence in the civil engineering and architectural education. This year, students of Sinhgad College of Engineering proved to be the epitome in Civil Engineering category and bagged most of the awards including 1st place in both the categories at Padmashree B G Shirke Vidyarthi Competition 2018 award ceremony held at Constro 2018, international fair on construction organised by PCERF in association with ABEC Exhibitions & Conferences Pvt. Ltd on Friday, January 20 at Agriculture College Ground, Shivaji Nagar.

This 3rd edition of Vidyarthi Awards was supported by the Shirke Group. Event was graced by the presence of Ar. Christopher Charles Benninger, Chairman, CCBA Designs Pvt. Ltd. who was also the chief guest and V G Jana, Sr. Chief Executive of B G Shirke Construction Technology Pvt. Ltd. also the guest of honour. Other dignitaries like Vishwas Lokare, President PCERF & Chairman Constro 2018, Neelkanth Joshi, Hon. Secretary, PCERF and Jaideep Raje, Treasurer, PCERF were also present.

Vidyarthi Awards instituted in 2016 had scope was limited to Pune students. This year, the scope was further expanded to other cities of Maharashtra like Kolhapur, Solapur and the Konkan region compared to last year which only included Mumbai. There were more than 160 expressions of participation in competition from 300 colleges of 17 cities. The competition is held across 4 categories i.e Architecture Under-graduate and Post-graduate and Civil Engineering Under-graduate and Post-graduate. Three prizes in each category were instituted. The awards were given in the form of cash prize, a trophy and a certificate.

12 Winners under all 4 categories were felicitated in Constro 2018. In Architecture, Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture, Pune bagged three awards in Vidyarthi Competition including 1st and 3rd prize in Post Gradate category and also 3rd prize Under Graduate category. Allana College of Architecture, Pune stood 1st in Under Graduate category for proposing Domestic Airport Terminal at Ratnagiri.

In Civil Engineering, Sinhgad College of Engineering Vadgaon (Bk), Pune stood 1st in the Post Graduate category for their topic- Response analysis of Effective Location and Positioning of Waste Water Treatment plant in High Rise Structures. It bagged 1st prize for ‘Online Air Pollution Control System’ and 3rd prize having subject as ‘Comparison of Bridge pier models for reducing local Scours’ in Under Graduate Category.

While talking about the event, Lokare expressed, “There is still a gap between the academic learnings and professional practice of the students. We came up with this award having an aim to minus this gap and to expose students to certain elements and requirements in the market which will give them fair idea of the industry.” He also affirmed that the Vidyarthi awards has received overwhelming response so far.

Jana who represented Shirke group said, “We are proud to be associated with such a unique award which motivates and provides opportunities to students in achieving greater heights.” He further added that students must take practical knowledge, word hard with dedication to be successful as there is no alternate way to achieve success.

The competition is meant for students who have already worked towards their academic requirement as per the respective University and Institute. Except the Architecture Under-graduate category, the entry is the “Project/Thesis” done at the final year/semester stage. For the Architecture Under-graduate category, the 4th or 5th year Housing/ Urban Insert project is the entry requirement. The process of entry selection and short-listing has been done in three stages viz. Institute level, Advisory Committee and lastly by Jury Panel
