Pune, 8th October 2025: The much-awaited season of sour-sweet gooseberries has begun, bringing a tangy delight to fruit lovers in Pune. Fresh gooseberries from Mahabaleshwar have started arriving at the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, marking the start of the annual harvest season.

Currently, around 10 to 15 kilograms of gooseberries from Mahabaleshwar are arriving daily in the wholesale market. The fruit, known for its distinctive taste and high nutritional value, is mainly cultivated in the cool-climate regions of Mahabaleshwar and Nashik.

“The demand for gooseberries is quite good. In the wholesale market, prices are currently between ₹300 and ₹500 per kilogram depending on the quality,” said Jesaram Manumal, a fruit trader at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard.

In the retail market, prices are higher, ranging from ₹400 to ₹650 per kilogram, depending on size, freshness, and grade.

The gooseberry season typically begins in October and lasts until May. The first phase of the season sees farmers from Mahabaleshwar and Wai bringing their produce to Pune, while the second phase — starting in December — witnesses increased arrivals from both Mahabaleshwar and Nashik.

During peak supply in December, about 100 kilograms of gooseberries arrive daily, leading to a fall in prices to ₹80–₹250 per kilogram, depending on quality. The supply continues steadily until May before tapering off with the onset of the monsoon.

Gooseberries, rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, are especially popular among health-conscious and diabetic consumers. The fruit enjoys strong demand not only in Pune but also in Mumbai and other urban markets, traders said.
