Southern Command’s Vijay Diwas Tribute in Pune Highlights 1971 Victory and Army Legacy

Camp, 16th December 2024: HQ Southern Command commemorated the 54th Vijay Diwas, marking India’s historic victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, with a solemn wreath laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial. Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Army Commander, Southern Command, paid homage to the bravehearts by laying a wreath and recalling their supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. The ceremony witnessed the participation of 1971 War veterans, serving officers, school children, NCC cadets and dignitaries fostering a spirit of remembrance and gratitude.
Vijay Diwas, observed annually on 16 December, marks the historic victory of India in the 1971 Indo- Pak war leading to the creation of a Nation – Bangladesh. This remarkable achievement stands as a testament to India’s military prowess and strategic acumen. The unprecedented event saw over 93,000 Pakistani troops laying down arms, making it one of the most decisive military victory in modern history. The victory not only liberated millions of people from oppression but also established India as a key player on the global stage.
Adding to the solemn celebration, a 405 KM Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon organised under the aegis of Maharashtra Gujarat and Goa Area was flagged in at the Command War memorial. The marathon, flagged off from Colaba, Mumbai on 06 December 2024 had 15 Core runners, including notable participants such as Col Mandeep Singh Maan (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd) alongside veterans, School children, local citizens and NCC Cadets from cities along the route. The runners traversed three major cities of Maharashtra – Nashik, Ahilyanagar and Kolhapur before concluding in Pune.
The Ultra marathon not only celebrated the valour and legacy of the 1971 Indo-Pak war but also served as a prelude to the Army Day 2025 celebrations scheduled in Pune on 15 January 2025, marking the second time the event being conducted under HQ Southern Command and the first in Pune.
Pune is hosting the Army Day this coming year on 15 January, bringing together the valour, commitment and synergy of the Indian Army under theme “Samarth Bharat- Saksham Sena”. This theme reflects the enduring spirit of the nation and its armed forces, emphasising the seamless integration of strength and resilience. The event will be a display of cutting-edge military advancement and will honour the indomitable courage of our soldiers who remain steadfast in safeguarding our sovereignty.
